Festimantic presents MTAC Conejo Valley students performing on YouTube’s global stage. Students upload their video performances of music from the Romantic and Impressionistic eras to YouTube where their performances are viewed and evaluated by three international judges.

Entry Requirements:

  • Eligibility: Instrumentalists – Levels 5 – Advanced;
    Vocalists – Levels 3 – Advanced
  • Repertoire Selection: Compositions from the Romantic and Impressionistic Eras, approximately 1825 – 1900
  • Repertoire Time Limits: Pieces with multiple sections or movements are limited to 4 minutes total. Single movements or single works may exceed the 4 minute time limit.
  • Memorization: All performances must be memorized
  • Entry Fee: $25.00

Festival Timeline and Procedures:

  • Video Upload Deadline:  11:59 PM, April 1, 2023
  • Deadline for sending the URLs to the Festimantic Chair:  11:59 PM, April 1, 2023
  • Registration Fee Deadline:  11:59 PM, April 1, 2023. Student URLs will not be forwarded to the judges unless all fees are paid in full.
  • Judging Period:  April 2, 2023 through April 13, 2023. The Festimantic Chair retains the name of the student and their teacher’s name. Judges receive only a numbered list with the URL addresses and the name of the pieces(s) being performed. Judges will evaluate  each video performance and give it a numerical score. All students will receive a written evaluation from each judge and a certificate of participation. Highest scoring students will be selected to play in the Honors Recital.
  • Honors Recipients Announced:  April 14, 2023
  • Honors Recital Participant Deadline:  April 16, 2023
  • Festival Honors Recital:  Saturday, April 22, 2023, 2:30 PM – 7:00 PM. Recital times will vary

Video Criteria:

  • Videos should be made in a single shot, without edits!
  • Videos are to be made with a single recording device, e.g. Smart phone, Tablet, Laptop Computer, or Camera.
  • The recording device should remain motionless and in a stationary position.
  • To ensure authenticity, the vocalist or instrumentalist should appear in profile or face forward, at an angle which captures a complete view of the performer’s hands and instrument.
  • Only the participant’s performance should appear on the video. No other identifying information should be included on the video.
  • Participants may record their video performance as many times as they wish; however, only one video performance should be selected by the participant to be uploaded to YouTube for the festival.

Uploading videos to YouTube:

    1. Create a Google Account (if you already have a Google Account, skip to step 2.)
      • Go to https://accounts.google.com
      • Click Create account
      • Fill-in the form with the information requested by Google to create your account
    2. Navigate to YouTube, www.youtube.com.
    3. Sign into YouTube using your Google Account e-mail and password. Click the Sign In or Upload buttons found on the upper right hand corner of your screen.
    4. Next, create a channel – Name your channel and click Create Channel
    5. Before you start uploading the video you can chose the video privacy settings. The privacy settings on your video can be changed at any time, before and after you upload it.
    6. By default, your video will be “Public,” which means it can be viewed world over.
    7. If you select “Unlisted,” the only people who can view your video are the people with whom you share the video’s URL.
    8. Do Not Select “Private.” A private video can only be seen by you and the users you select to view it by adding their personal e-mail to a private list. You will not have access to the evaluators private e-mail addresses, so your video will not be viewed by the evaluators if you select “Private.”
    9. Select the video you would like to upload from your computer.
    10. It is possible to edit both the basic information and the advanced settings of the video as the video is uploading.
    11. Click Publish to finish uploading a “Public” video to YouTube. If your video privacy setting is “Unlisted”, click Done to finish the upload.
    12. If you haven’t clicked Publish or Done, your video will not be viewable by other people. You can always publish your video at a later time in your Video Manager. YouTube will send you an email to notify you that your video is done uploading and processing.
    13. Once your video is uploaded, the URL (web address) of the video will appear on your screen. Use the URL to preview your uploaded video to ensure it plays correctly.
    14. E-mail the video URL to your teacher, who will preview your video and then send the URL and your Festimantic entry to the festival chair.
    15. Congratulations and Good Luck, now your video performance will be entered into Festimantic.
