In the spring, the Conejo Valley Branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC), in affiliation with the Southern California Junior Bach Festival (SCJBF), holds a Junior Bach Festival.  The Junior Bach Festival is a series of competitive recitals featuring exclusively the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 -1750).

The Conejo Valley MTAC  Junior Bach Festival participants perform their Bach selection in recital, for a panel of three SCJBF judges. The judges will select qualifying recitalists to perform in the Bach Regional Festival.

Performing at the Bach Regionals are the festival winners from SCJBF Region 1, comprised of the Conejo Valley, Kern, Pleasant Valley-Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Santa Clarita branches of the MTAC.  At the Regional Festival, three SCJBF judges qualifying participants to receive a special award.  From the Bach Regional winners, those students who perform repertoire from the SCJBF Complete Works Audition list will move on to compete in the prestigious SCJBF’s Complete Works Audition.

At the Complete Works Audition a gold, silver, and bronze medalist will be chosen from each of the twenty-seven categories of Bach’s repertoire found on the SCJBF’s Complete Works Audition list.   All medalists will receive their awards at a special “Complete Works Audition Awards Concert” where the gold medalists will be presented in recital by the SCJBF.  As an additional honor, the gold medalist will also appear on the “SCJBF Honors Program” held in the fall during the Los Angeles Bach Festival.

Junior Bach Festivals, for young pianists, are held by MTAC branches throughout Southern California. The events are open to all pianists “under the age of 19 as of April 1 of each year. Organists, strings, winds, and voice students are also eligible to participate in the SCJBF Bach Keyboard (Piano) Branch Festivals. For more information the SCJBF visit https://www.scjbf.org.
